NEUROFEEDBACK TRAINING FAQs:
1. What is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is a trauma-attuned, non-invasive training designed to improve brain function by promoting self-regulation, a crucial aspect of optimal brain performance. It measures brain activity in real-time and provides feedback, guiding the brain to shift toward healthier patterns.
This method is particularly helpful for addressing brain dysregulation, such as feelings of anxiousness, low mood, difficulty focusing, trouble sleeping, and stress-related challenges. Neurofeedback also supports personal development and emotional resilience by enhancing the brain's adaptability.
2. Is Neurofeedback a Cure?
Neurofeedback is not a "cure" but is more like a coaching tool to enhance brain function. For challenges related to brain dysregulation, self-regulation is often the key to improvement. However, for organic or degenerative conditions, such as Parkinson's or complex trauma, neurofeedback aims to enhance quality of life rather than offer a definitive cure.
3. What Conditions Can It Help?
Neurofeedback is effective for individuals experiencing "small-t" trauma, which refers to invisible traumas (challenges and stressors that may not be immediately apparent but still impact emotional and mental health), as well as complex traumas (prolonged, repeated exposure to distressing events). These forms of traumatic stress are often overlooked by society due to their invisible nature. It can assist with:
4. Do Training Effects Last?
The effects of neurofeedback are often long-lasting, especially when addressing brain dysregulation. The brain continues to use its improved capabilities. However, conditions like autism or degenerative diseases may require ongoing training. Factors such as nutrition, lifestyle, and environment also influence progress.
5. Why Are There So Few Neurofeedback Practitioners in Malaysia?
Neurofeedback is not yet widely integrated into medical or psychology curriculums. At New Mind Brain Health Centre, we take pride in being pioneers in Malaysia. Our Clinical Director, Dr. Hiro Koo, is a master trainer certified by SBCIA Singapore. Over 12 years ago, he was personally trained by the late Dr. Kenneth Kang, a psychologist who first introduced neurofeedback technology to Southeast Asia in 1995, nearly 30 years ago, and completed over five years of supervision under his guidance. Our team consists of certified SBCIA clinical neurofeedback practitioners dedicated to advancing this powerful technique. Despite their busy schedules, they actively conduct neurofeedback research and development and collaborate closely with academicians at universities.
6. How Does Neurofeedback Support Trauma Recovery?
Our trauma-attuned neurofeedback approach addresses invisible trauma (subtle but impactful stressors) and complex trauma (intense, prolonged distress). By targeting emotional dysregulation and stress responses, neurofeedback reduces symptoms like hyperarousal, emotional reactivity, and difficulty concentrating. It also promotes resilience and emotional control, making it a valuable tool for personal development and psychosocial support.
7. Our Neurofeedback Approach
At New Mind, we use a neurofeedback training protocol that aligns with cutting-edge research methods to address trauma responses. While the majority of our clients do not have clinically diagnosed trauma, many seek support for "small-t" traumas or complex trauma concerns. This protocol focuses on alpha-desynchronization within the default-mode network to help regulate emotions and reduce trauma symptoms. A recent research conducted a 20-session, double-blind, randomized controlled trial to explore the effects of neurofeedback on individuals with PTSD. The study found significantly decreased PTSD severity scores in the experimental neurofeedback group, with improvements maintained even at the 3-month follow-up. This suggests that neurofeedback can effectively help restore abnormal brain rhythms, particularly alpha oscillations, which are linked to hyperarousal in PTSD. Read the research here.
8. What Type of Neurofeedback System Do We Use?
We use EEG Neurofeedback (Traditional Neurofeedback), a well-researched, flexible, and effective method with decades of proven success. It involves placing sensors on the scalp to monitor and train brainwave activity. EEG neurofeedback is highly effective for a wide range of concerns, but it requires skilled practitioners to achieve the best outcomes.

These forms of traumatic stress are often overlooked by society due to their invisible nature. It can assist with:
- Children: Sleep issues (e.g., bedwetting, nightmares, teeth grinding).
- Adolescents: Anxiousness, low mood, aggressive behavior, and addiction.
- Adults: Emotional regulation, behavioral coaching, psychosocial hazards, and workplace stress.
It also helps maintain cognitive performance and emotional balance as the brain ages.
